K-pop legend Seo Tai-ji will perform at the annual Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) on Dec. 3 in Hong Kong, the organizing committee said Monday.
Shin Hyung-kwan, executive vice president of Korea’s entertainment conglomerate CJ E&M, confirmed Seo’s participation in MAMA during a press conference in Sangam-dong, western Seoul.
Since Seo made his debut as a leader of Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992, Seo has been considered a pop icon. The 42-year-old pop veteran recently released his ninth studio album. Shin added that Hong Kong’s super star Andy Lau will participate as an award presenter.
“We are placing emphasis on inviting super star celebrities in greater China region into our awards ceremony this year. (Besides Andy Lau) we are also contacting with other Chinese super stars, and will be able to give more details later this week” he said. In MAMA held last year, legendary singer Stevie Wonder and Hollywood’s celebrity Paris Hilton made guest appearances.
CJ E&M’s cable network Mnet, specializing in pop music, established the MAMA in 2009 in to expand its existing award ceremony “Mnet KM Music Festival” into an international event.
The MAMA has given fans the opportunity to vote for their favorite nominated music acts. Nominees in 17 categories were announced last month.
